They go from strength to strength.
I’ve been a part of strength training classes for most of my adult life. While I don’t always enjoy the difficulty of the classes, I do appreciate the results of being stronger. I’ve realized that as I get older, I need to continue to challenge myself in weightlifting. As believers in Jesus Christ, we also must continue to press ourselves to go from strength to strength in our faith.
We are made in God’s image to continue to grow up spiritually. Just as we need to put a little more weight on a barbell for a good workout, we will need a little more spiritual weight to carry in our faith. Many times we don’t want that extra weight, instead preferring to live a consistent life of comfort and predictability. Yet that’s not God’s plan and purpose, as He has called us to be a peculiar people from a different land.
To go from strength to strength in our faith requires discipline and a pulling away from the desires of this world. We may have to fast at times. We will need to develop our prayer life to become more intense and focused. We will need to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit to do greater works in the ministries that He has placed us.
Going from strength to strength in the natural sense helps take care of our earthly bodies. However, growing from strength to strength in the Spirit gives us greater clarity of purpose in this lifetime and greater rewards in the next. We must shed everything that is extra and unnecessary weight in our lives to press forward with a renewed spiritual fervor to grow up in the faith.
Dear Lord, I need to grow from strength to strength in Your ways. Give me the desire and motivation to grow up spiritually. In Jesus’ name, amen.
