How to Start a Personal Bible Study

For the word of God is living and active.

Hebrews 4:12

Many times Christians recommend that people start doing a Bible study to grow closer to God, to seek peace in the midst of trials, or when they are waiting on God. Sometimes it can be confusing because the Bible is made up of many books of different styles that are written by various people. Yet there is only one Author of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, with a message for those who would humble themselves to hear and understand His word.

It’s good to begin a Bible study first with a prayerful attitude of seeking God. The Word of God is more than just a bunch of words to read for our daily checklist. God’s Word is convicting, renewing, restoring, and inspiring for us to move along our day. His Word gives us wisdom to know what to do and when to do it. His Word also plants itself in our hearts so that we can draw from it when we are in the greatest need. God’s Word will never let us down—He will accomplish every single thing that He promises.

After a prayerful attitude, it helps to have a notebook, pen/pencil, and place to read if possible. This allows us the best opportunity to soak in His word and remember it for later. There are many ways to begin a Bible study—each of us needs to find the one that works for us in order that we may grow in wisdom and knowledge.

We can do a Bible study of topics like love, faith, trust, and peace. We can study the Bible from Genesis to Revelation to get a full picture of its structure. Many of us like to read the Psalms for a deeper understanding. We can study the people of the Bible like Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Job, Esther–this list goes on. There’s the study of the life of Jesus on Earth by reading Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Some believers like to focus on the church and the writings of Paul to the churches.

If we make up our minds to study God’s word, then we can seek guidance from Him on the best course of study in this season of our lives. Regardless of the method, the practice of feeding on God’s word every day will result in a fruit of righteousness in our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, it’s my desire to study Your Word. I pray that You give me wisdom on where to begin in this season of my life and grant me the stamina to follow through with it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
