I ran out of gas even though my gauge showed I had at least 30 miles left. However, a couple of miles out, my truck lurched forward and stopped. Unfortunately, it was on a busy two lane highway with cars going over 55 miles per hour. I called the police because I couldn’t fill the gas without standing on the highway which was a little over a hill; therefore, drivers couldn’t see me until they were almost too close. It was a major inconvenience that could’ve been avoided if I’d been more careful.
Our spiritual faith tanks can also get too low if we aren’t paying attention. Some of us may have faulty gauges that give us the impression that our faith tank is more than it really is. We think that going to church, praying, and reading our Bibles every once in a while is enough until a major crisis hits. Then we want to press into our faith and find that we don’t have enough to make it.
We all have spiritual faith tanks that need to be filled regularly in this Christian journey. God has given each one of His children a measure of faith for their lives. (Romans 12:3) When we neglect to keep our faith tanks full, discouragement, fear, and worry are all ready to fill up the empty space. How can we keep our faith tanks full?
#1) Admit when we’ve neglected to keep it full. (James 5:16) God is ready to forgive and restore us as we confess our weaknesses.
#2) Take action to fill it back up again. (Colossians 3:16) Instead of feeling bad about ourselves, we can fill our hearts with God’s word and remember His faithfulness to us.
#3) Choose to be ready at all times. (Matthew 25:13) Filling our spiritual faith tank is an everyday choice we make when we put God first and everything else second (including ourselves).
Dear Lord, my faith tank is low because of my own neglect. Restore my faith so that I can be used to do Your good will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
