For most of my adult life, I’ve had many people come and ask my advice for situations in their lives. I don’t feel they come to me because I act like the perfect Christian or that my life is perfect. I believe God has drawn the men and women to my life because I’ve learned to speak words of wisdom by trusting in His word. What are the 4 L’s of how to speak words of wisdom?
Look to God.
We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. (2 Chronicles 20:12)
Many times when I’m asked for advice—I simply have no idea what to say. While I’m listening to them, I’m at the same time asking God to give me what to say. My knowledge and experience has limitations; however, there are no barriers for the Spirit of God who knows everything about everyone.
Listen to the Spirit.
He will guide you into all the truth. (John 16:13)
The Holy Spirit will lead us into the truth of the situation if we are willing to listen to Him more than we trust our own feelings and thoughts about a situation. The Spirit may not lead us to share everything, but just what is necessary to help someone grow closer to Him.
Learn by listening to their concerns.
Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. (James 1:19)
Many times we may feel tempted to share our own experiences. While there may be opportunity for this—we must discipline ourselves to listen carefully because what comes out of their mouths reveals the state of their hearts. (Luke 6:45)
Lean on the word of God more than our opinions.
For the word of God is living and active…discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
God’s word is the very best resource for any advice given to others. Yet, we need to know His word through knowledge and application in order to share with others.
Dear Lord, I want to give the best advice possible that would bring others to know You better. I pray for wise words to come out of my mouth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
