God ordained marriage as the best and safest relationship to enjoy all the sex that a couple desires. The Lord doesn’t command us to flee sexual immorality because He wants to take away all of our fun. Rather, He wants to protect us spiritually, emotionally, and physically if we do things His way rather than from our own selfish desires or from the worldly influences.
His Spiritual Protection (Ephesians 5:5)
“For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”
Our inheritance in Christ Jesus is a big deal. Many times because we are so consumed with the distractions of material possessions, we disregard the true and lasting rewards that will be given to those who were faithful to obey God’s commands.
His Emotional Protection (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality.”
Sexual intimacy binds our hearts and minds to another person. Without the protection and commitment of marriage, many of us find ourselves used and drained of our vitality when the other person moves on.
His Physical Protection (1 Corinthians 6:18)
“Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”
Sex against our bodies can result in unwanted pregnancies, lifelong sexually transmitted diseases, or even death. God created us with the intention of being with one person for life to protect us from this pain.
If we’ve not obeyed God’s command to flee sexual immorality, there’s hope for the repentant. We can stop sinning and start seeking after God with all of our hearts. He gives us the power and way to escape sexual temptation if we are willing to humble ourselves and obey.
Dear Lord, I want to do better and live a sexually pure life. I pray for Your help to overcome this temptation and live in the freedom of Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
