In the last days there will come times of difficulty.
Some of us live in parts of the world where being a Christian brings much persecution and problems. Others of us live in an environment where we can afford to be casual Christians. Casual Christians sometimes attend Sunday services, give some of their money, and participate in some community outreach events when it’s convenient to their lifestyles. This type of Christian rarely talks about their faith outside of church. Their closest friends and family members don’t really see a significant difference between them and those who reject Christianity. Their main goal is to maintain the peace at all costs.
However, in these last days, casual Christianity will no longer be a viable option. Either we are hot in doing God’s will and living for Him or we are cold and distant from really knowing anything about Jesus. Truthfully, casual Christianity isn’t really Christianity at all; rather, it’s more of a family tradition or rules of do’s and don’ts to follow.
Yet a time of testing and difficulty will reveal the true Christians from those who are casual followers. When our world’s systems fail to protect us economically, physically, and emotionally, our true allegiances will be revealed. If we don’t have a firm foundation of faith in the living and true Lord Jesus Christ, we will fall apart with those who are of this worldly culture.
We can awaken from our stupor of unbelief and truly put our faith in God before the day of testing. If we do so, we won’t be filled with despair and fear. Instead, we will rise to the occasion of strength and faith in God even when everything else falls apart.
Dear Lord, deliver me from casual Christianity and help me to grow up spiritually so that I may find my strength in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
