Patience’s Perfect Work

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

James 1:4

Isn’t it hard to be patient while we wait on God? It would be different if God would give us a time period and we had to just wait it out 2 days, 2 months, or even 2 years. Even if it was a longer amount of time, we could bear it as long as we checked off every hour or day that put us closer to what we want. However, the essence of trust doesn’t involve an hourglass. Many of us have watched our hourglass run out of sand without the change we desired.

Trusting in God when it seems almost completely hopeless to the last minute may appear to be fruitless to us and others. Yet, there’s a spiritual transformation working in us when we push for patience in spite of our tough times. When we allow patience to have her perfect work in us, we attain maturity and contentment in this lifetime.

Spiritual maturity and contentment typically go hand in hand. Those who’ve walked with God for a long time have understood that He doesn’t work according to our timetable. Instead He works in a greater more expansive way of touching many lives at one time. Our view is limited and as we grow in our relationship with God, we learn to accept that we don’t see the whole picture.

Because of this maturity, we are calmer inside and find more contentment even when things don’t seem to be going in our favor. We recognize the overwhelming gift of joy in spite of the sorrow that surrounds us. We embrace love when hatred abounds, and we are at peace when everyone else seems to be in turmoil. Patience works perfectly in the hearts of those surrendered to God’s will.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’m impatient many times and I know that I need to grow in this area of my life. Calm my anxious heart to trust You more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
