Mushy Apples

Ahn Ei Sook was imprisoned and abused for years under the cruel tyranny of the Imperial Diet during World War II in Korea. When she was starving for food, she asked God for apples. However, when God did miraculously send many apples to her, they were mushy apples…not exactly what she had in mind. Yet because of her restricted diet and the poor condition of her teeth, these mushy apples were exactly what she needed by providing nutrition and ease to be eaten.

Has God ever given you mushy apples? You have something in mind and pray your request, yet He answers in a much different way. It’s during those times that we must embrace that God gives us what we need a lot more times than just what we want. We could choose to be ungrateful and toss back what He has given. Or we can be thankful for His provision of our needs over our desires.

Our mushy apples may be evident in our relationships, careers, or even our spiritual gifts. Spiritual growth happens as we develop a renewed sensitivity to God’s hand over our lives, even when it’s not exactly what we wanted. When we turn to God for discernment to see our situation as He sees it, we come into agreement with His way and find ourselves in a place of peace with contentment.

There is great joy when we finally get the big picture! However, we can only see it when we choose to humble ourselves and trust in the Lord’s hand over our lives. Mushy apples may not be the high priority of our prayer list, but they might be God’s will for us.

Prayer

Dear Lord, give me eyes to see how You answer my prayers on a daily basis. Keep me from missing the opportunities to grow spiritually with a thankful and trusting heart. Amen.
