If our popular TV shows mimic our culture—marriage is dead and moving in together is acceptable in the eyes of God. However, the Bible remains steadfast through generations of men and women who attempt to deny the truths of God. Marriage is good and acceptable according to Hebrews 13:4 “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”
If we think we will escape the judgment of God for sexual immorality, we deceive ourselves. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are called to purity and holiness in our relationships. Living together without being married seems practical and acceptable given the dramatic increase of broken marriages. However, we must careful to not call “good” what God calls “evil”.
Once we’ve engaged in a sexual relationship with another person—it’s very difficult to pull away because of the emotional bonds. Our hearts may convict us of our sin; yet we are compelled by our love and emotions to stay in an ungodly relationship. In addition, sometimes living together seems practical for companionship as well as financial planning.
However, as believers we have the Spirit of God to empower us to live lives of righteousness and obedience to God’s commandment about sex in the context of marriage. It’s better to marry than to live in conviction of our sin. God will grant those who obey His word and marry before move in with the endurance to stay together in holy matrimony.
Dear Lord, I repent of sexual immorality and seek Your forgiveness and power to cleanse me. Give us the wisdom and strength to marry instead of living together in sin. In Jesus’ name, amen.
