Love it or Loathe it

Married people are given the incredible gift of sexual intimacy from the Lord. This intimate union is meant to seal a couple together in spirit, mind, and body. Their relationship throughout the years will have ups and downs with careers, children, financial complexities, etc. However, their sexual union is to remain intact if possible.

Many people struggle with their sexuality due to the past sexual relationships or abuse, immorality, addictions, or ignorance. As a result, we have spouses who either love the sexual union or loathe it. It’s God’s will that His children deal with these difficult issues; rather than to ignore them and hope they just go away.

If you love the sexual union, but your spouse seems to loathe it—there’s a problem that needs to be dealt with in patient understanding. No one wants to be forced, coerced, or challenged to engage in sexual intimacy—especially if threatened with the word of God. If a man or woman is experiencing spiritual, emotional, or physical pain with sex, it can’t be ignored. If there’s a problem, couples need to seek wisdom from mature and godly mentors, counselors, or other spiritual leaders.

A healthy sexual relationship between a man and woman is best enjoyed when both people want and desire each other. Physical intimacy isn’t the whole relationship, there are many other bonds of passion, purpose, and calling on a couple’s life together. Yet, it’s an important foundation of trust and transparency that needs to be protected, enjoyed, and matured in every Christian marriage. God gives grace for husbands and wives to look to Him for wisdom, strength, and discernment in their sexual relationship. It’s a gift not given to everyone.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’ve struggled with sexual intimacy in my marriage. By Your grace and mercy, please show me the right way to honor this important foundation in my marriage. Amen.
