As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we have the gift of salvation, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, and a renewed hope for our lives. Yet, we can struggle with our flesh or sinful nature just like anyone else. Being a Christian doesn’t insulate us from desiring what we know is sin. Many believers struggle everyday with lust, overindulgence in eating or entertainment, unrestrained anger, selfishness, etc. The more we deny our struggles, the more power we hand over to them.
Yet, there is a way out. In 1 Corinthians 10:13 we know that “no temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” God provides a way for us to keep our flesh in check if we are willing to walk in righteousness and purity. How can we keep our flesh in check?
1st Step: Confession – admit that we have a problem and ask for God’s forgiveness.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
2nd Step: Redirection – actively redirect our minds away from our temptation by knowing and doing God’s word.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
3rd Step: Sanctification – remove ourselves from those people or things that continually bring us down.
“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:21-22)
Dear Lord, I want to be free from living under the dictates of my flesh. I pray for Your divine help to overcome my temptations. In Jesus’ name, amen.
