It’s the Dog in Me Part 2

I had neighbors with a dog that behaved differently depending on who was walking it. When the husband walked the dog, it kept in perfect step. When he jogged, walked or stood still, the dog wouldn’t move one inch away from him.

Unfortunately for his wife, it was a totally different scenario. When she decided to walk the dog, you couldn’t tell who was walking whom. The dog yanked her across the street, sniffing everything she wanted to sniff, barking at everyone, and chasing after rabbits.

Just like this wife, many of us are being yanked around by the flesh (the dog within) to places we don’t want to go. It’s time for us to get out our leashes and put a chokehold on the flesh today.

We first must recognize that we need to deal with our flesh and not make excuses for it. We don’t have to give into the cravings of the flesh because we have the power of God to overcome it. Secondly, we confess our struggle to God and receive His forgiveness to experience life without guilt or condemnation.

Next, we separate ourselves from anything or any person that provides an opportunity for our flesh to thrive. We may have to take drastic measures to not give our flesh the feeding ground it desires. Lastly, we seek the Holy Spirit every day for direction and wisdom in the area of our weakness.

We can do this because we were created for more. God wants us to win over the cravings of our flesh. It takes the step-by-step, full and complete dependence on the Holy Spirit to give us the strength to overcome the flesh.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for the freedom in Christ to overcome the flesh. I pray for the strength and courage to do whatever it takes to master the flesh rather than have it master me. Amen.
