It takes Two

Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?

Amos 3:3

Marriage can be wonderful and difficult at the same time. Couples are typically drawn towards each other because of their similarities, but also because of their differences. Regardless of opposite mindsets or personalities, married couples can survive the most difficult of tests if they are in agreement on the commitment of marriage.

Yet, it takes two people of the same conviction to make it work. Jesus said to the Pharisees, “because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:8) When a husband or wife allows the hardness of their hearts to take precedence over unity, there will be division and disagreement that could lead to separation and divorce.

It takes both the husband and wife to press forward through forgiveness, reconciliation, unconditional respect and love for each other. Even unequally yoked marriages (where one spouse is saved and the other isn’t) can survive if there is unity in other areas of the relationship. Through the grace of God, a believing husband or wife can find the places of agreement and stand in the gap for their spouse.

Unfortunately, even in the body of Christ there is division when one spouse refuses to step up and do what it takes for the marriage to survive. God can change the hardest of hearts; yet, this doesn’t happen for every marriage. In those times, it’s essential for the other spouse to cling to the Lord for wisdom, guidance, and discernment on their next steps. God has called us to peace. (1 Corinthians 7:15).

There’s always hope of reconciliation and healing for those who put their trust in the Lord. It may take two for a marriage to last until death; however, it only takes one mustard seed of faith for God to do His greatest work in our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for Your guidance and wisdom in marriage. Help couples to walk in agreement according to Your word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
