I Believe, But…

I believe; help my unbelief!

Mark 9:24

I can’t imagine the unbearable pain of the father in Mark 9:14-29 where his son had been controlled by a demon since childhood. This child would writhe uncontrollably, grind his teeth, foam at the mouth and become deathlike. If that wasn’t enough, the demon would lead the boy to fire and water in an effort to take his life. In my mind, I see a very frustrated, tired and discouraged father who loved his son very much.

He originally brought his son to the disciples, who couldn’t help him and were arguing with the scribes. When Jesus showed up, the father shared, “… But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us” (Mark 9:22). Jesus responded, “‘If you can!’ All things are possible for one who believes.” The father helplessly replied, “I believe; help my unbelief!” Jesus cast out the demon, and the boy was made whole.

As believers we know that God can and that God cares about the impossible situations in our lives. Even still, we struggle with our unbelief because, just like the father, we are looking squarely at the impossibility of our situation!

Yet the more impossible the situation, the more glory that God receives. In that moment when we feel like it’s not ever going to change, we can pray, “Help my unbelief!” It’s our Father in heaven who loves us and allows us to share our hearts without shame. The Lord always takes regard for the faith of His children regardless of our unbelief. We must refuse to narrowly focus on the impossibility and instead refocus on God’s love and greatness over our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help my unbelief in this situation of my life. Strengthen my faith through your word, and comfort me in times of prayer. I trust You, even when I don’t understand everything around me. Amen.
