How to Deal with D.O.U.B.T.

For the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

James 1:6

Have you ever had those times when doubt keeps knocking at your door? You want to believe and trust in God, but that little twinge of doubt won’t go away. Doubt is real and if we don’t deal with it in the right way—it will eventually take root in our hearts and block our blessing. How do we deal with D.O.U.B.T.?

D – Do what we can do.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Sometimes we allow doubt to paralyze us and we find ourselves unable to do what we can do. Satan uses the weapon of doubt in an attempt to fool us into a mindset of apathy.

O – Open up our minds to the positive possibilities.
“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13)

Doubt can only focus on the negative, but faith drives us to know that “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) We can be intentionally optimistic in our thinking through God’s help.

U – Use our sword of the Spirit.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17)

This weapon of God’s word is necessary to drive back the fiery darts of doubt. Knowing God’s word empowers us to believe past our circumstances.

B – Be obedient to the leading of the Spirit.
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness.’” (Hebrews 3:7-8)

In times of doubt, we need a listening ear to the Spirit. God is always speaking to His children, but we have to do more than just hear His voice—we need to do what He instructs us to do according to His word.

T – Take the steps of faith.
“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:26)

All the faith in the world doesn’t quench doubt—that faith must be put to action to know if it’s real. When action is partnered with our faith, doubt will have nowhere to go but away from our hearts.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’ve let doubt linger for way too long. I pray for Your wisdom and guidance to step out in faith and trust in You with all of my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
