How Deep Is Your Love

Divider

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly

1 Peter 4:8

In 1977 the disco group Bee Gees released a song about how deep the love of another person is in the relationship. It describes a love that has expectations, yet there is the recognition that this love continually goes away. The world has the ability to express the depth of expected love; however, it can’t compete with the unconditional love of God for His children and His children’s love for one another.

We are called to love each other deeply in Christ. This type of love is difficult, if not impossible, to express on our own. Many of us are conditioned to love those who love us. We aren’t skilled in the art of loving those who are difficult to love, who may mistreat us, or who may cause us to feel weary with helping them. The temptation to avoid, ignore, and resist those who aren’t loving comes much easier than the unconditional love of God.

Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are given the ability to love unconditionally (Romans 5:5). To love one another earnestly is to go deeper than surface love. It’s the type of love that will have us get up early or stay up late praying for each other. It’s the type of love that helps a grieving believer long after the funeral. It’s the type of love that steps up to help a struggling young mother or a lonely elderly widow. It’s the type of love that patiently disciples a new believer in Christ.

Each of us may need to ask ourselves, “How deep is our love really?” Are we more conditioned to express love to those who are easier to love and serve? Or do we stay close to the heart of God to discern those who may be needy for our agape love?

Prayer

Dear Lord, I confess that my love can be conditional at times. I pray for You to fill my heart with agape love of Christ for my brothers and sisters in the Lord.
