God Meant It for Good

You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good

Genesis 50:20

Joseph was the favorite son of his father, and his brothers were intensely jealous of him. They hated him so much that they sold him as a slave and told his father that Joseph was killed. Joseph was forced from the comfort and care of his father’s home to being a slave and a prisoner in a strange land. Maybe he spent time thinking about what he had done to change the course of his life or what wrong he did to deserve such a great injustice.

We aren’t given insight into Joseph’s thoughts during his time of struggle. However, we see Joseph’s choices in his life that give us a clearer insight of who he was. Joseph refused Potiphar’s wife when she attempted to seduce him. He was given second-level authority in every place because of his integrity. Joseph kept true to his convictions, even when his father wasn’t present. When his brothers were finally approached about their sin, Joseph resolved that even though they meant it for evil, God meant it for good.

Many of us have had those times when we contemplate our lives and wonder why would God allow such pain and suffering. It’s especially difficult when we have lived faithful lives—not perfect but to the best of our knowledge, experience, and ability to walk in righteousness. It may be difficult for us to understand how good could come from anything evil.

However, just like Joseph, we need to remain true to the faith and our conscience in continuing to do the right thing regardless of our circumstances. We are called to be salt and light, to be different from the world in our life choices. Just like Joseph, we will experience better days in Christ, Who makes all things work for our good.

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes my life is hard. Yet I know that you work all things for my good. Help me today to focus on your goodness and faithfulness as I make my way through. Amen.
