Asa found himself in a situation that was beyond his ability to overcome. When Zerah the Ethiopian came to battle with a million soldiers and 300 chariots against Asa’s mere 300,000 men, there didn’t seem much hope of winning. Yet, Asa immediately cried out to God for help. According to verse 13 “the Ethiopians fell until none remained alive, for they were broken before the LORD and his army.” The Lord made Asa’s battle—His battle to win.
Many of us have been overwhelmed by situations that are much bigger than our capacity to deal with them. Just like Asa, we look at our situation as hopeless and beyond help. It could be dealing with difficult people, financial insecurity, workplace pressures, etc. Whatever it is, it’s beyond our spiritual, mental, or physical ability to overcome. The outcome isn’t predicted to be in our favor by any means.
In the midst of our battles, we may not feel like we are going to win. In fact, the more practical we become about our situation, the more confident we are of impending failure. However, because God is our Provider, Protector, and Savior—we have everything we need to overcome our difficulty. God knows everything, even the battle we are facing. He expects that we would do like Asa and cry out for His help. The Lord’s hand and favor over our lives is the defining difference to our victory.
When we cry out to God, He makes our battle, His battle to win. He wants us to lean more on Him and less on our circumstances. We can get the victory in Christ, because God will fight this battle for us.
Dear Lord, the battle before me is beyond my ability to overcome. I need Your hand to work this difficulty to my favor so that I can be free of its grip. In Jesus’ name, amen.
