There are many good preachers who are pure in their intent to teach and preach the word of God. Yet, there are also many false teachers and preachers who don’t represent the sound doctrine exhorted by the scriptures. Instead, they are driven by the lust for power, money, and control over God’s people. Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize a wolf in sheep’s clothing. In these last days, spiritual fruit inspectors practice the 4 R’s:
#1) Review the scriptures to compare to what is being preached with the word of God teaches. (Acts 17:10-11) False preachers and teachers have a way of twisting God’s word to make it say what they want us to believe. However, if we remain intimately close in the knowledge and application of the Bible, we won’t be fooled.
#2) Refuse to let ourselves be deceived with the promises of material wealth from this world. (Matthew 6:33, Colossians 3:2) Many false preachers appeal to the lusts of men and women who settle for money and goods instead of the priceless gift of God. While having money and goods isn’t evil, desiring them above God and His purpose for our lives is the root of all evil.
#3) Resist the lure of always seeking the easiest way out of complete obedience to God’s word. (2 Thessalonians 1:8) False preachers will provide excuses to those who don’t want to live in obedience to Jesus’ teachings. They will create intellectual detours that deceive people from knowing the joy and reward of obedience.
#4) Remain in total allegiance to Jesus Christ. (Matthew 12:30) False teachers will proclaim that there are many ways to God; yet, the truth of Scriptures reveals that Jesus is the only way to the Father. They will attempt to convince people to comprise their faith in order to placate the cultural drive.
Dear Lord, I pray for keen discernment to root out the false teachings from deceived men and women. Direct me to Your preachers and teachers who follow the truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
