When Friends Become Enemies

And Saul eyed David from that day on.

1 Samuel 18:9

When David killed Goliath, King Saul immediately took to him. He asked about his family, gave his daughter as a wife to David, and set David in leadership over the armies. Yet in a short period of time, Saul realized that God was with David and not him. Saul harbored a dangerous hate and did everything he could to kill David.

When friends become enemies, it’s difficult because we’ve shared many personal moments and thoughts with them. This makes us particularly vulnerable to being attacked in ways they know can hurt us most. It could be a family member, spouse, or best friend who turns into our worst enemy. What are we to do when our friends become our enemies?

Rely on God’s grace to deal with it. (Psalm 86:6)
We can’t deal with the disloyalty of a former confidante on our own. The temptation to act out in our flesh is strong; however, the grace of God will continually provide us forgiveness, peace, and wisdom to get through it.

Repent if we’ve done something wrong. (Matthew 5:23-24)
Sometimes friends become enemies because of our sinful choices. If this is true, whether they forgive us or not, we have a responsibility to confess and repent. God will honor our repentance and use it for His glory.

Remember that God will avenge us. (Hebrews 10:30)
We don’t have to return evil by exposing their secrets to get back at them. Instead, we trust in the Lord to right all the wrongs. God sees everything, and He will take care of us if we trust in Him first.

Prayer

Dear Lord, it’s hard for me to forgive them. I pray for Your grace and mercy to be with me so I can release them and move forward with Your plans for my life. Amen.
