No Regrets

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:14

Many of us regret things that we have said or done in the past. We sometimes struggle with those regrets, and if we aren’t careful, we could allow those regrets to set the course of our lives. However, God never intended for His people to live in the past—we are to live victoriously in the present time and future.

While regrets are an unfortunate consequence of living in a sinful world, we are to learn from them and leave them at the cross. Can you imagine the regrets that Paul had to deal with when he came to the faith? He was a part of the Pharisees, who had people killed or imprisoned for their faith in Jesus. Do you think he ever came across those people or their relatives after the faith?

If Paul lived every day in his regrets, he may have never shared the Gospel because he wouldn’t feel worthy of it. He had to push past his regrets and press forward to the goal set by God for him. It’s not that Paul didn’t live with the consequences of his prior life before God. Rather, he didn’t let the consequences determine the course of his calling.

We, too, must not let our regrets determine our life journey. We may have to apologize and make things right with people, but we keep moving forward. God has a plan for our lives, and it doesn’t include living in a state of regret.

There is an amazing and refreshing journey of freedom for those who know Jesus Christ as Lord. He makes all things about us (the good, bad, and ugly) turn towards our good because He is God!

Prayer

Dear Lord, I have regrets, but I don’t want to live a regret-filled life. Instead, I want to be free in Christ to do Your good will out of a spirit of thankfulness for Your freedom and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
