Divorce Doesn’t Equal Despair

The LORD has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit

Isaiah 54:6

Many Christian women are divorced because of their husband’s adultery or refusal to live as God has called. Their husbands may have been abusive spiritually, mentally, emotionally, or physically, causing disruption and instability to their families or home.

While there are women who walk away from the covenant and sanctity of marriage, there are a greater number of them who found themselves under the control and domination of narcissistic men. This difficult marriage can result in an environment of fear and anxiousness and possibly erode the wife’s ability to serve God and raise her children in a stable home.

Women who find themselves in this situation don’t always choose divorce as their first option. Instead, many of them seek God in prayer and fasting as well as clinging to the Scriptures and seeking godly counsel. There are no easy answers except to strive towards hearing clarity from the Spirit of God (John 16:13).

When a husband refuses to humble himself and receive godly counsel to do the right thing, a wife may have to divorce or separate. God is a witness in the marriage, and He sees what happens behind closed doors. The Lord will show honor to the woman who trusts in Him regardless of her marital state. He will give favor and kindness to his faithful daughter in spite of her broken marriage. The Lord will strengthen her to know Him as her Husband in order that she can move forward and live in the freedom of Jesus Christ—not in despair.

Prayer

Dear Lord, while I don’t desire divorce or separation, I want to live in peace and safety. Grant me the wisdom, courage, and strength to know what is best in your will for me and my family. In Jesus’ name, amen.
