Dealing with our Wayward Thoughts

But we have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16

Many of us have thoughts that aren’t pleasing to God. They could be lustful fantasies directing us towards the pathway of sin. We could have thoughts of failure and never feeling like we are going to make it. Some struggle with thoughts of suicide or depression when the weight of the world seems to fall on our shoulders. There are those who need medical help; while others need to retrain our thoughts according to the word of God:

Think on God’s word:
“Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.” (Proverbs 16:20)

Think on doing what is right:
“The thoughts of the righteous are just; the counsels of the wicked are deceitful. (Proverbs 12:5)

Think on being obedient to God:
“When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.” (Psalm 119:59-60)

Think on returning good and not revenge:
“Repay no one evil for evil but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.” (Romans 12:17)

Think on God’s goodness:
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)

When we turn our thoughts towards God and His grace—we build a resistance to those thoughts that lead us towards living a sinful life. This takes intentional effort as many of us are passive and apathetic about our thinking.

Use 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 as the weapon against recurring evil thoughts: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

Prayer

Dear Lord, my thoughts are many and I need them to line up with the truth of Your word. Lead me into thinking what is right and good so that I may glorify You in my actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.
