Coping Skills When Times Are Desperate

Divider

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

2 Corinthians 12:9

Have you ever been in a place where you wonder, “How in the world did I get here?” Sometimes our place of desperation is our own fault, and sometimes it’s because of others. Regardless of the cause, the result is the same: desperation. We have choices–either throw up our hands in surrender to desperation or choose to be relentless in our pursuit of God to get through it. We can learn to C.O.P.E when times are desperate.

C – Call on God first (Psalm 17:6)!
Many times we are tempted to call our family and friends, and there may be times to call on them. Yet everyone is secondary to Christ Jesus; He’s our first One to call. We may not always receive an immediate answer to our problem; however, we can receive immediate peace from God regardless.

O – Obey what the Bible reveals to us (Psalm 119:56).
Every day we need to be in the Scriptures in some way. The daily reading, meditation, and listening to God’s word give us insight and direction on what to do. God will bring to our remembrance that exact word we need at our most desperate times.

P – Pursue a private place to collect your thoughts and commune with the Holy Spirit
(Matthew 14:13).
There’s something about pulling away from the busyness of our lives that brings healing and restoration to our desperate souls. We can sing songs of worship and praise to usher in the presence of God. Many times He will speak gently to our hearts and minds on how we are to move forward.

E – Expect the Lord to renew our strength to move forward in faith (Philippians 4:19).
The Lord renews the strength and courage of those who turn toward Him. There’s a renewed vigor and insight when we know that God has heard our prayers. He is our heavenly Father Who is good and wants the best for His children.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’m having a difficult time coping with all that’s going on around me. Restore and renew my spirit so that I can do Your will in this time of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
