Cleanse our Conscience

Divider

Purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Hebrews 9:14

Some people go to a lot of trouble to clear their consciences. They will use drugs and/or alcohol to help ease the sting of guilt from past sins. But it only adds more fuel to the fire of their pain. Some of us will run to therapists, pastors, priests, family members, and/or friends. Sometimes this helps if there’s wisdom rooted in the word of God. Some of us run ourselves ragged with trying to make up for our past deeds by doing good works. Again, this can help assuage guilt—but it can’t blot the pain of our past.

The purifying process of a clean conscience begins and ends with knowing God and His word of truth. Our good works help us live out the righteousness and grace given to us from God—but they can’t make our conscience pure. Talking to family and friends helps us vent and receive great advice—but at some point, we will be alone to deal with ourselves.

The beauty of believing God’s word is that we can experience the power of His forgiveness and cleansing from our sins. We may never completely forget our mistakes; however, through the presence and healing of the Holy Spirit—the sting will go away.

When we submit our hearts and minds to the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, His sacrifice purifies us and sets us apart for God’s purpose and calling. In this, we are encouraged to push past our doubts and fears to believe in faith that God still wants to use us for His glory.

“As it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one’” (Romans 3:10) Not one of us is cleansed on our own. We are all at the mercy and grace of God to cleanse our consciences from the deadness of our past so that we can experience the joy and freedom of knowing the Lord as our Savior.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray that You would purify and cleanse my conscience through the power of the Holy Spirit so that I can be free to serve You with all of my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
