Follow me.
We are a generation of followers. We follow people on the internet. We follow people on what we eat, wear, or choose for recreation. Some people follow others to their destruction with false religious teachings. Others follow their friends down a path of drugs or alcohol.
Yet Jesus is still calling people to follow Him. He doesn’t force us to follow Him or His ways—He gives us the choice of whom to follow. We have been given the gift of choice. If we choose to follow after Jesus, then we have chosen new life and meaning. What does it mean to F.O.L.L.O.W after Jesus?
F – Find our way to the truth and purpose for our lives in Jesus.
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
O – Own up to our inability to live righteously or productively without Him.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
L – Leave behind anything that prevents a wholehearted commitment to Jesus.
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37-38)
L – Listen to His voice.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
O – Obey His commandments.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
W – Witness to others about His life, death, and resurrection.
“Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17)
Dear Lord, I want to follow after You with my whole heart. I pray for the wisdom and strength to do it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
