When Dreams Diminish

Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Genesis 40:23

Have you ever had a dream diminish right before your eyes? We may have spent a great deal of prayer, time, and money investing in something that now may never happen. This devastating experience can cause a lot of us to give up the faith or become apathetic in our Christian walk. When dreams diminish, we may wonder about the point of moving forward. We may find ourselves unable to recuperate our dreams.

Joseph may have felt the same way. He had big dreams of becoming a great leader that even his family would one day bow to him. Yet, instead he found himself a slave and a prisoner in a foreign country for many years. In prison, he became acquainted with the cupbearer who was close to the Pharaoh. When he correctly interpreted the servant’s dream, he asked, “Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house.” (Genesis 40:14)

However, as soon as the cupbearer was released and restored to his former position, he promptly forgot about Joseph. It would be years later when Pharaoh’s dream would trigger his memory of Joseph. As a result of Joseph’s interpretation, he was made second to the king and eventually his family would pay homage to him.

Our dreams may not be as elaborate as Joseph—many of us would settle for much smaller dreams to accomplish. Yet, when our dreams diminish in spite of our faithfulness to God—it only means that He has something better for us. It’s an opportunity for us to recalculate our thoughts about God’s plan for our lives. Just as Joseph’s timing would’ve been off if the cupbearer spoke too soon, we too, must trust that the dreams God placed in our hearts will come to fruition in His perfect timing.

Prayer

Dear Lord, my dreams seemed to have come to an end and I don’t know what to do. I lean on You for direction, peace, and understanding to dream again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
