You shall not eat just one day…but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils.
The Israelites were discontented with the manna that the Lord gave them for nourishment out in the desert. Instead of making a humble request to God, they complained and murmured against Him. It was so bad that Moses asked God to take his life! As a result, God led Moses to appoint 70 men to help him lead the people; and He sent quail as meat. However, some of the people were so filled with gluttonous lust, God judged them and they were killed.
We must also take a careful look at our own requests of God. We need to check our desires to make sure that they are in alignment with God’s will for our lives. Sometimes we ask for things that aren’t good for us, but we lust or desire them more than we desire for God’s will.
Many times the Lord won’t honor our request, just as a loving parent doesn’t give their children everything they ask of them. Obviously, children don’t always have the maturity and foresight to see that their requests will do more harm than good. It’s the same with our Father in heaven. He won’t always give us the very things that will inhibit our spiritual growth in the faith.
However, just as the Israelites, if we continue to stumble in discontentment, making everyone around us miserable, God will give us in abundance what we ask. It will teach us a great lesson because we may experience immediate pleasure, but it’s followed by a long time of pain. In these cases, God will give us grace to get through it if we are willing to humble ourselves and seek forgiveness.
Dear Lord, help me to be careful for what I ask of You. I want my desires to be in perfect alignment with Your will. Amen.
