Back to the Boats

I am going fishing.

John 21:3

From the disciples’ point of view, Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose again. Now what? Jesus appeared to them twice and did many miraculous signs in their presence. After a while Peter, announced, “I am going fishing,” and some of the disciples followed him. After a night of catching no fish, Jesus appeared again, and their nets were immediately overfilled with fish. Peter recognized Jesus and swam over to Him. After they ate, Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him. Peter confessed his love for Christ, and he was admonished to feed the sheep.

Just like the disciples, we may get distracted from our calling and are tempted to go back to our former way of thinking and living. This doesn’t mean that we return to a life of sin, rather a life of back to normal. In other words, back to the boats, back to living a life of doing what everyone else is doing, making it day to day.

However, if there is a calling on your life, God doesn’t want you to go back to the boats. He wants you to get busy about His business of building Christ’s kingdom. Life doesn’t go back to the same old things once you’ve encountered the living Savior. He ignites a passion in your heart that can’t be ignored. Nor can it be contained in your normal way of life.

There’s a responsibility for us who are called by God to take the risk of faith and love Christ with all of our hearts. We can’t afford to waste time doing the same old things we used to do. There’s no reason to go back to the boats, as Christ can meet all of your needs according to His power and glory.

Prayer

Dear Lord, give me the strength to walk forward in my calling and resist the temptation of going back to the boats. In Jesus’ name, amen.
