Buddy Up Right

Bad company ruins good morals.

1 Corinthians 15:33

Have you ever played a game where you needed to choose a partner? Our choice can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing the game. While games aren’t so important, the choices we make in our close circle of friends have an influence on our faith.

As followers of Christ, we have to be picky about who we choose to be in our close circle of friends. Yet because we are in this world and not of this world, we will have friends who are unbelievers. And if we are to win unbelievers to the Lord Jesus Christ, we will want to make friends with them first. Yet those friendships shouldn’t have a significant place of influence in our lives. If we really love them as friends, we will do our best to share the Gospel of Jesus and live righteous lives before them.

Our close circle of friends should be a diverse group of people who love God. They may include friends who are more mature in the faith along with friends who may be new to the faith. In the body of Christ, we are diverse in our culture, background, and race; yet there is unity in the Spirit.

Good friends will encourage us to choose what God desires over our own desires. They will rejoice in our victories and weep with us in our losses. Friendships built on the foundation of Jesus Christ will continue to grow even when there’s a disagreement. We learn to agree to disagree but continue to move forward in the faith. Christian friends aren’t perfect, yet we are encouraged to build each other up in the faith.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to find good Christian friends whom I can encourage as well as be encouraged by in the faith. Amen.
