For we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.
All of us have had a guilty conscience. What is important isn’t just the reason for our guilty conscience, but also what we do with a guilty conscience. Many of us make excuses for ourselves, especially when we deem our sins as small in comparison to someone else’s sins. Or sometimes we believe that “God understands,” so that makes it okay when we miss the mark of acting honorably in all things.
However, having a clear conscience empowers us to move in faith when prompted by the Spirit. We are no longer hesitant when we know that God has spoken to us in His word because we sense His presence and blessing over our lives.
On the other hand, having a guilty conscience can inhibit our ability to hear from God, and we are more prone to have doubts about our life. However, there is a remedy for the guilty conscience that is complete and cleansing. It is confessing our sins and seeking God’s forgiveness. According to 1 John 1:9, God is faithful and just to forgive us as well as cleanse us from our unrighteousness.
Feeling guilty in our conscience does have an upside—it’s a reminder that we are God’s children and He still cares enough about us to convict us of our sins. We don’t ever want to get to the dangerous place when our consciences are so numb and dead that we no longer feel any guilt about our sins. In that case, God will get our attention one way or another because He disciplines those He loves.
Strive today towards living life with a clear conscience by choosing God’s way.
Dear Lord, my conscience can be guilty at times, and I don’t always deal with it right away. I pray for Your Spirit to direct me towards confession and repentance so that I can hear Your voice in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
