Fear L.E.S.S.

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.

Romans 8:15

The fear that encircles our culture and society is real. There’s fear of terrorist acts, the fury of nature, criminal behavior, and financial instability. If we aren’t careful, we can begin to let fear infiltrate our lives and slowly our faith in God begins to wane. In these perilous days, how can we fear L.E.S.S.?

L – Leave every concern at the feet of Jesus.
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Whatever is causing us to fear—we need to call it out to Jesus. Be honest. He already knows our worst fears and yet He can fill us with courage through the Holy Spirit. Speaking it out to our Lord loosens the grip of fear over our hearts.

E – Expect that there will be troubles in this world.
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Wars, rumors of war, and devastation should not surprise us according to Matthew 24:6-25. Our hope and confidence isn’t based on global peace and unity. Rather it’s based on God’s plan of salvation to every person on this earth.

S – Set our attention and affection focusing on heaven more than this world.
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2)

When our attention is given too much to the cares of this world—fear will soon overtake us. Our confidence is built up when we continue to invest our energy into prayer and studying of God’s word.

S – Stir up your faith by taking steps of action to build the kingdom of Christ.
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” (Romans 1:17)

Fear can paralyze our steps in faith. Yet, through the power of the Holy Spirit we can take steps of action to build Christ’s kingdom. Our faith is demonstrated by what we do in our homes, work, church, and community.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to be fearless in this world so that Your kingdom will grow where You’ve placed me. Fill me with the Spirit to do Your good will in spite of the troubles that surround me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
