When the Wait feels too Long

And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son.

1 Samuel 1:20

Hannah desperately wanted a child, but she was barren. Years went by with Hannah weeping and refusing to eat when she went up to the house of the Lord. Her husband, Elkanah, loved her, but he couldn’t understand her pain. His second wife, Peninnah, who had sons and daughters, would tirelessly provoke Hannah about her closed womb.

It was after one of those visits when Hannah was pouring her heart out to God and Eli saw her. His first impression was that Hannah was drunk; however, she quickly communicated to him that she was praying out to God. Eli blessed her with comforting words and Hannah found her peace. And in due time she conceived and had her son, Samuel.

She dedicated Samuel as a young child to the Lord according to her vow. (1 Samuel 1:11) Hannah visited her son every year and brought him new clothes. The Lord blessed Hannah with Samuel growing up in the presence of God and with her having five more children later.

Samuel couldn’t be born too soon nor too late. If that were so, he would’ve missed the opportunity to anoint David as king over Israel who was part of the Messianic line. Yet, Hannah’s prayer came in “due time” meaning God had a plan all along that needed Samuel to be born at a specific time to minister to His people.

What is it that we are waiting on God to do for us? We can be like Hannah crying out day and night for God to answer our prayers. We may lose the desire to eat and engage with others because of our disappointment. God hears our prayers and we can wait patiently on God to answer in due time just like He did for Hannah.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I confess my impatience in waiting on You to answer my prayers. Help me to wait patiently as a I trust You to answer in due time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
