Pray They Get Caught

Being the mother of five children isn’t easy. Many times I feel like there are five pieces of me all over the country (sometimes the world) that I can’t protect from trials and temptations. When my children were young, I told them that if they did the wrong thing, I pray they get caught. This meant if everyone in the classroom was acting up, they would be the ones caught. If everyone was doing the wrong thing outside the classroom, they would get caught.

As one could imagine, they didn’t like this at all. I explained that if they got caught, there was opportunity for them to learn from their mistakes when they were young. If they can learn hard lessons early, they could overcome their temptations and become God-loving adults. As parents, we must be willing to release our children into the hands of God to get caught when they choose to do the wrong things.

This is difficult because we want the best for our children. We want them to experience every good thing that God has for them. Yet sometimes we forget that they have choices and must deal with the consequences of their choices without our intervention. It’s good to get caught because that means God loves them too much to let them continue in sinful behaviors.

We can make the choice to be our kids’ parent over being their friend. Having a good relationship with our children is much desired, and we should continually do everything we can to nurture a strong bond with them. More importantly, we strive to train them up in the ways of the Lord even if it means that we pray for them to suffer the consequences of sinful choices. This prayer is made in love and not hate or anger—we trust in God to lead them on the right paths.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom and discernment to be the parent You called me to be for my children. Give me the strength to release them to Your loving arms. Amen.
