Your Child’s Coach

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life.

Proverbs 13:14

Many successful people can point to a coach in their younger years who led them to believe the impossible. A great life coach has a significant impact on their students well beyond their initial relationship. As parents, we have the ongoing role of being life coaches to our children. Even when they’ve grown up and moved on from our training, they will still need advice as they are traveling down the road we have already traveled.

As our children’s coach, we need to make sure that we are responding to them out of the Spirit and not in our flesh. Many times our flesh doesn’t want them to ever suffer, when in our spirit we know there’s some lessons only taught through painful times. We also need to advise them beyond our own limitations because their journey may be completely different from ours.

A good coach doesn’t just see what their student can do in the moment—they see the potential of what they can become. As parents, we want our children to go farther than what they think possible spiritually, emotionally, and physically. While we can’t live the life for them, we can encourage them to live beyond perceived limitations.

Coaches are valued for their knowledge of a field as well as their ability to train others. A good coach doesn’t necessarily have to be good in the field themselves; however they have the ability to help others excel. As parents, we don’t have to be scholars to encourage our children’s academic pursuits or talented in their specific skill sets. However, we can be the sounding board of encouragement when other voices are telling them it can’t be done.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to be a good coach for my children. I pray for discernment to teach and train them in the ways they should go. In Jesus’ name, amen.
