Who’s the Boss

“In the LORD’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him”

Proverbs 21:1

In the mid-1980’s there was a popular American TV sitcom called “Who’s the Boss?” This show highlighted a single mom with a great career needing the help of an unconventional housekeeper. It highlighted how many of us think we are the “boss”; however, the influence of our family, friends, coworkers, life circumstances, and earthly bosses sometimes seem to boss us around.

Those who live according to the dictates of this world will focus their attentions around pleasing their boss in order to move up in the workplace. However, this often can lead to disappointment because people will always let them down in one way or another. A people-pleasing attitude and outlook on life will eventually lead to a mighty crash of dreams and life purpose.

As believers we are compelled to keep our focus on God and not man. Jesus is the Boss of us and we must continually seek His wisdom and direction for our vocational choices and promotions. Paul admonished in Colossians 3:23-25 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

As long as we look to our earthly bosses to give us the accolades, rewards, or promotions that we feel we deserve, we will fall short and become disillusioned in our work. God is the Boss of our bosses even if they don’t know it. He will control every decision that affects our work and use it for His glory. As we look to God as our heavenly Boss and trust in Him to give us wisdom, insight, and the strength to do our job well—we will exceed human expectations and pave the way for future rewards.
