Numbers 22:24

Have you ever wanted to get somewhere quickly but the street has bumps in the road to slow cars down? Sometimes this is how life is—we see or know where we want to go and we try our best to get there quickly—but then there are life speed bumps.

These bumps come in manner different ways. It could be an unexpected accident or illness that consumes our energy and strength. Sometimes it’s a relationship struggle that doesn’t seem like it will ever be resolved. For some of us, it’s a job demotion or loss that’s caused us to pause longer than we’ve wanted.

When these life speed bumps happen, many of us get frazzled and upset with God because we know that He could smooth out the bumps. Yet, God doesn’t respond in the way that we always want. He wants us to mature in our spiritual walk to be more like Jesus Christ. As a result, He allows these bumps in the road to make us slow down and reflect in prayer and His word. What can we do when life’s speed bumps get in the way?

B – Be honest about where we are spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
“But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’” (Luke 5:8)

U – Understand that God has a plan and He’s in control.
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21)
M – Move in the direction the Spirit is leading us.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16:13)

P – Place all of our dreams and expectations at the foot of the cross.
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah” (Psalm 62:8)

S – Start again with taking steps of faith.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes it seems like there’s a bump in my life at every turn. Even though I struggle at times, I will keep the faith in You to lead me where I should go. In Jesus’ name, amen.
