Jesus was at the pool of Bethesda and He noticed a sick man who had been there for a long time. He asked the man what he wanted and the man replied, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” (John 5:7). Jesus told him to get up and walk. The man was immediately healed of his illness.
Sometimes it’s hard for us to ask God what we really want. We may struggle with asking because we don’t want to be disappointed if He doesn’t come through in the way we desire. We may not ask because we know that we haven’t given God our full devotion. We also may not ask because we aren’t necessarily sure of what we really want from God.
Yet, the Lord already knows our hearts and He’s asking us so that we are willing to speak the truth for ourselves. There are several ways we can figure out what we really want:
We can express what we want in a prayer journal. (Jeremiah 30:2)
We can express what we want in reflective prayer and meditation of God’s word. (Psalm 145:5)
We can express what we want in a song. (Psalm 144:9)
We can express what we want to our closest companions. (Psalm 34:3)
Whatever way we choose to express what we really want from God, He will respond in His perfect timing and purpose. It’s our responsibility to put it out there to God, regardless of how scary or risky it may feel. Through the Holy Spirit, we will feel led to speak honestly, candidly, and openly about what we want from the Lord.
Dear Lord, help me to speak clearly what I want from You in faith and courage. Decrease my fears and inhibitions so that I may grow from this experience. In Jesus’ name, amen.
