What Are You Doing?

Divider

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.

Ephesians 2:10

Many parents tell their children to do what they say and not what they do. However, this creates a problem because children typically will do what their parents do. One of my favorite quotes comes from Donald Miller’s book “Blue Like Jazz”: What I say I believe is not what I believe; what I believe is what I do.

Do we lie or exaggerate? Do we sleep with our partners without being married? Do we leave work early? Do we cheat on our tests? Do we speak down to our spouses? Do we withhold giving financial offerings to our churches? What are we doing?

Our works of righteousness or unrighteousness speak to what we believe. If we really believe in the power of God, we can tap into it to overcome the weaknesses of the flesh. If we really believe that we work for Jesus, we will become the best employees at our jobs. If we really trust in God to help us in our studies, we will be better students. If we love and respect our spouses as the Bible teaches us, we will remain married. If we give generously to kingdom work, we will experience greater blessings in Christ all around.

What we do matters because it is the result of being changed from the inside out. Others will see God’s glory revealed in us as we do the good works we were saved to do.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I don’t always pay attention to what I’m doing and how it impacts those around me. Give me a clean heart and renewed spirit to do those things which bring glory to Your name. Amen.
