Verbal Abuse

The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit.

Psalm 36:3

Some of us have suffered under the assault of verbal abuse. Because of other people’s words, many believers are held captive by the deception of words such as: “you will never be anybody”, “you are useless and stupid”, “you are so ugly”, etc. This verbal abuse has a way of settling deep in our souls and only the power of God can root them out. Yet, we must be willing to let God dig deep into the intricate parts of our hearts to remove the lies. How do we accomplish this?

First, we must recognize the negative thoughts aren’t from God. Some of us were raised by adults who didn’t understand the power of their words. In their sinfulness or ignorance, they’ve said things to us that we’ve embraced as our own thoughts or worse—we think those words come from God. If we are constantly bombarded by negative thoughts, we can diminish them by using 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (KJV) every time we hear them in our heads.

Second, we must fill our minds with the truths of Scripture. For every evil thought, we replace it with the word of God. For instance, if we were called ugly, we speak to ourselves Ecclesiastes 3:11. If we were called useless, we speak Proverbs 16:4. If we were told that we would never rise above our situation, we speak Jeremiah 29:11-12. If we were told that we are stupid, we speak 1 Corinthians 2:16 and Philippians 4:13.

Third, we forgive those who’ve hurt us with their words. Some spoke out of the evil in their hearts and other simply repeated the verbal abuse lashed out on them. Either way, in order for us to move forward in God’s plan and purpose for our lives, we need to be free. Freedom happens when we release them and allow God to bring healing to our hearts.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I ask You to root out every evil word spoken to my heart. I need Your Holy Spirit to usher in the refreshing, healing, and truthful words of Your Holy Scriptures. In Jesus’ name, amen.
