And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.”
We were making good time on our way home from visiting my son without a lot of problems. When traveling through Atlanta, we did (as expected) hit a traffic jam, even though it was Sunday afternoon. However, afterwards it was smooth driving until we hit the mountains of Tennessee. Quite unexpectedly, after rounding out a circle of the mountain, traffic turned a bend and came to a sudden stop. Everyone had to slam quickly on their brakes to keep from being in an accident. Apparently, there was road construction that was directing five lanes of traffic into one lane.
Samson’s life demonstrated what is was like to live in the fast lane of life. He became accustomed to his gifting from God and assumed that it would always be available to him–until the day of his traffic jam and the Spirit of God had left him. Instead of being indestructible, he became as all men: limited in physical strength.
As women, we can become accustomed to the gifts that God has given us and neglect spending time with Him in prayer and Bible study. This happens a lot because we know the Scriptures, we know the Christian talk and walk, and we are many times blinded from our own weaknesses. As a result, we experience a traffic jam in our spiritual relationship with God. We can keep inching along, or we can get off the crazy track of busyness and make God a priority again in our lives.
It’s not easy because the exit may require more time than we think we have. Yet if we would shake ourselves from those things that hinder our spiritual walk, we can be more readily used by God to fulfill His purposes for our lives.
Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve taken for granted Your gifts and calling on my life. Help me to shake loose everything that hinders my walk with You, and renew the right spirit within me. Amen.
