Each one must give as he has decided in his heart … for God loves a cheerful giver.
Giving can be a touchy issue. Some people are natural givers and give not only of their finances but also their time and energy to build the kingdom of God. Others are more calculated about their giving, preferring to give no more or less than what they’ve done for years. Regardless of the giving method, our main drive should be to give grace. Many times we make giving more complicated than what it needs to be for the body of Christ. What are the top ten dos and don’ts of giving in grace?
1) Do give in faith. Don’t give in unbelief. (James 1:5-8)
2) Do give with a thankful heart. Don’t give out of compulsion. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
3) Do give with a joyful heart. Don’t give out of frustration. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
4) Do give courageously. Don’t give in fear. (2 Timothy 1:7)
5) Do give to please the Lord. Don’t give to please people. (1 Thessalonians 4:1)
6) Do give sacrificially. Don’t give miserly. (Luke 21:1-4)
7) Do give in expectation of God’s blessing. Don’t give in doubt. (Luke 6:38)
8) Do give to be a blessing to others. Don’t give to get for yourself. (1 John 3:17)
9) Do give anonymously at times. Don’t give to be seen by other people. (Matthew 6:1-4)
10) Do give faithfully to your local ministry. Don’t give looking for influence over church leadership and directives. (2 Corinthians 9:1-14)
Our giving or lack of giving reflects our stake in building the kingdom of God. One day we will all stand before God and give an account of how we managed the financial responsibilities He gave us. May we all hear hear “Well done!”
Dear Lord, I want my giving to reflect the grace that You have freely given me. Help me to understand and walk in truth with my giving to the kingdom of God. Amen.
