Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.
There’s something tragic about watching a healthy adult behave in a childish manner. In this age of everyone being recorded by phone, there are plenty of grown folks caught behaving worse than 2-year-olds. You are left to wonder why or how they have missed their opportunity to mature and handle situations as adults.
Yet there are many Christian believers that have been stunted in their spiritual growth. After many years in the church, they should be spiritual leaders and godly mentors to those who are new in the faith. However, due to carnality, stubbornness or pride, they haven’t grown much and have become a stumbling block to those who really want to grow in their faith.
How do you know it’s time to grow up spiritually? When you haven’t been stretched in your faith in a long time, when you love the things of this world more than God, or when your spiritual walk has become dry and mundane.
Earthly parents watch their young children closely to be sure that they are making the next steps to growing up healthy. If there’s a problem, they want to deal with it quickly while the children are young. God is the best parent ever, and He desires to see every one of His children grow up and mature in spiritual matters.
Because God disciplines those He loves, He will take drastic measures to get our attention if we need to grow up spiritually. He may make our lives very uncomfortable and inconvenient in order to get us to pray and study His word more often. It’s our responsibility to submit to and obey His word so that we will come out of the spiritual rut.
Dear Lord, I recognize that in many ways I need to grow up in my faith. Help me to recognize the right steps to take towards spiritual maturity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
