The Comfort of God

Because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Psalms 86:17

Young children will often to cling to a favorite blanket or stuffed animal when they want to be comforted. They sense the peace of these inanimate objects so that they can stop crying, go to sleep, or enjoy time with family. At some point in time, maturity finds comfort in other areas and children will let go of their childish ways.

However, even as adults, we need to find our comfort in times of distress. Some people find comfort in food, drink, friends, or a combination of all three. Others find comfort in recreational activities or some type of isolation. While there’s a diversity of finding comfort, we need to find a higher level of comfort in order to sustain us through the difficult days.

God offers us comfort primarily through the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). There will be times in our lives where no one can really comfort us except the Lord. People may have the best of intentions; yet, when our souls are troubled, we need Holy Spirit comfort. Through the Spirit of God, we are comforted by the word of God and as we mediate on His promises, our spirits are renewed and reinvigorated to move forward in the faith.

The Holy Spirit also comforts us with His presence in our lives. We may not see Him, but we sense His healing and comforting presence in our hearts and minds. The Holy Spirit comforts us with the remembrance of God’s past faithfulness and future hope in our hearts. Like a cozy blanket to a child, we are wrapped in His love so that we are assured of His calling on our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’m in a place where I need Your comfort in my spirit, mind, and body. Strengthen me according to Your word. Amen.
