Spiritual Compatibility

Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?

Amos 3:3

What does it mean to be spiritually compatible with other believers? It doesn’t mean that we’re exactly alike; rather, our diversity of strengths and weaknesses can offer great opportunities for growth. A spiritually compatible spouse or friend is a gift from God to encourage, exhort, and strengthen each other and hold each other accountable. We can assess their spiritual compatibility around the following questions:

Who does this person really serve? (Joshua 24:15)
Sometimes people can give the appearance that they are serving God and others, yet over time it may be apparent that they are really only serving themselves. Time will reveal their true master.

What spiritual value do they bring to the relationship? (Hebrews 3:13)
The relationship is either drawing us closer or further from God. The right spiritual companion will always lead us to desire more of God than anything else.

Where do they draw their spiritual strength? (Psalm 84:7)
If their strength is rooted in their physical appearance, mental abilities, bubbling personality, or anything other than God, the relationship will be off balance.

Why do they want to be in a relationship with you? (Proverbs 16:2)
Are their intentions pure or ungodly? The Holy Spirit will plainly reveal the truths of their hearts if we are willing to listen and watch their lives with unbiased discernment.

When do they make time for God in prayer and Bible study? (Psalm 42:1)
Everyone who sits before God in consistent conversation and meditation will handle life differently than those who don’t. Their time with God will be evident in the fruit of their behaviors and desires.

How is this relationship developing your spiritual maturity? (Hebrews 6:1)
If we aren’t drawn to pray more intently, study more deeply, or live more purposely for the Lord, this relationship may be more of a hindrance to our faith.
