Single Mom’s Hope

Hagar the Egyptian faced a tough life with Abraham and Sarah. She was given to Abraham by Sarah to have a child. Most likely in her immaturity and pride, she behaved irreverently towards Sarah. As a result, Sarah dealt harshly with her and Hagar ran away. Pregnant Hagar may have been attempting a long and dangerous trip back near her homeland. Before she could get too far away, God showed up.

The Lord talked to Hagar and had her return to Sarah. Hagar named that place You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees. Later when her son, Ishmael, was a young teen, she was sent away by Abraham. Hagar was again met by God, who supplied her with the water needed for their survival.

God saw her plight in both situations and intervened. He still sees the plight of single mothers across the world and provides for those who turn their hearts towards Him. He doesn’t simply look at our suffering—He takes action and gives single mothers the strength to move forward when they are at their weakest state.

Single mothers who lack the support of the children’s father can especially feel the heavy burden of providing everything to keep the family alive. Just like Hagar, we can cry out to our heavenly Father, who provides what we need at the right time. The presence of the Lord on our lives doesn’t guarantee that everything is good all the time; it simply means that the God-Who-Sees will be with us in the journey.

God hasn’t forgotten the struggles of the single mothers. He is a father to the fatherless and will bless the godly mother above and beyond what she asks of Him. Our responsibility is to submit to the Lord at every turn of our lives and those of our children. He will show Himself faithful.

Prayer

Dear Lord, it can be overwhelming as a single mom to raise children alone. I pray for Your strength and wisdom in all that I do, as You are the God-Who-Sees. Amen.
