Simplify your Life

For one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

Luke 12:15

Our world glorifies those who live in excess. If you have the biggest house filled with the most expensive items—you’re the winner! However, in God’s economy—you can have all the riches of the world and be in utter spiritual poverty. As believers in Jesus Christ, we have to be careful not to allow the pursuit of earthly riches to overtake our hearts. By living SIMPLE, we can still enjoy the fruits of our labor with a healthy spiritual balance:

S – Seek God’s kingdom and purpose over our own.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

I – Investigate our motives for wanting more.
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”
(James 4:3)

M – Master our money and resources with wisdom.
“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (Luke 16:13)

P – Purge our home of things we don’t need nor use.
“But the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.” (Matthew 4:19)

L – Let go of the desire to prove or impress others with our accumulation of things.
“The poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the rich has many friends.” (Proverbs 14:20)

E – Engage in cheerful giving in the abundance that God has blessed us.
“Your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.” (2 Corinthians 8:14)

It’s not that being wealthy is sinful—it’s the love of money and desire to increase accumulation of things that sway our hearts away from God. If we would live SIMPLE, we can find peace and grace whether rich or poor because our hope is in Christ.

Prayer

Dear Lord, keep my heart from straying towards the love of riches. Help me to be content right where You have me and use my abundance to be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
