Asa had a great victory early in his kingly career. The people must’ve talked all over the kingdom about how God gave their 300,000 men the victory over the one million soldiers of their enemy. However, at some point in time, Asa changed his confidence from trusting in God to trusting in other military leaders from foreign lands. Perhaps Asa figured he only needed God for the large battles, but he could handle what he thought was the smaller ones. As a result, God judged him to deal with wars his entire time as king.
Many times we are like Asa—we will call on the Lord when things are really bad or out of our control. However, when we get a little too confident in ourselves or in the support of others, we can underestimate our need to pray to God. Some believe that God doesn’t want to be bothered with our little prayer requests. Yet, because He is God over all of our lives—He wants us to turn to Him.
Parents can get overconfident because of experience and neglect seeking God’s wisdom when talking or advising our children. Married couples get complacent in praying together and find themselves more distant from each other and God. Students can get overconfident in a class so they don’t pray, and find themselves struggling in the middle of a test.
Our relationship with God is to be an everyday conversation and experience—not just when things are really difficult. If we seek Him, we will have more confidence in our times of prayer and we are more ready to pray regardless of the situation. Nothing is too little to seek God’s hand for our lives.
Dear Lord, I have many things on my heart and I ask that You give me how to pray about them. Keep me from being more confident in anyone (including myself) than You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
