Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
When looking for a job, many of us seek those that have great benefits. These benefits can sometimes be the deciding factor of taking a job or not. Unfortunately, in this day of economic downturns, fewer businesses are offering great benefits. However, those that do tend to get the best new hires.
There are always and forever great benefits for those who follow Jesus Christ as Lord. We are blessed to know that God is with us all the time and He will never leave us. We are blessed that God hears our prayers and answers according to His will. We are blessed to know that this life isn’t the end for us but that we have a heavenly home with God forever. We are blessed all the more abundantly because our sins are forgiven through Jesus Christ, and we don’t have to live our lives out in guilt, shame, or regret.
With all these benefits, who would not want to be a part of the kingdom of God? However, sometimes, as Christians, we can get spiritual amnesia. We forget all the benefits that we have because of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. We forget that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit so that we can receive instruction on the right way to go. We sometimes forget to be thankful to God because of His benefits.
What is worse than spiritual amnesia? To know of the benefits but never use them. It’s worse for Christians to live below their benefits. It’s like someone who has a great job with all the benefits—but they never in the course of their career take advantage of the benefits. As believers in Christ Jesus, we have the benefit of enjoying a rich and full relationship with God every day.
Dear Lord, save me from spiritual amnesia by helping me to remember all the wonderful benefits of being a part of Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
