Remember your First Love

You have abandoned the love you had at first.

Revelation 2:4

Do you remember falling in love? It was more than infatuation, a crush, or puppy love. It was the real thing—something in our hearts and minds clicked and we knew this person was the one. Our first love is the one we wanted to know us and we know them. There was a connection that was deep and drew us together. As powerful as our earthly love relationships are, there is much move in the first love we have with Christ.

Romantic love is beautiful and wonderful to experience; however, many times it can be conditional. At times, we love them as long as they love us and show us their love. The love we share with our Lord and Savior is even deeper than the eros or romantic love we have for another person. This agape or unconditional love will never end and we are drawn to His love when we are led to Him. Yet, the love of Christ remains even if we fall short in the faith. As a matter of fact, it’s the love of Christ that draws the backslider to Him.

Some of us have forgotten our first love, Jesus Christ. We’ve become consumed with following our passions and ambitions to the point that we no longer desire Him like we did in the past. As a result of forgetting Him, we are less driven to know Him in a deeper way, we are more prone to the temptations of our sinful nature, and we lack spiritual depth.

Because of His unconditional love for us, we can turn back to Him. We can remember what it was like to sense His loving presence and peace when we opened our eyes in the morning. We can remember what is was like to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit gently leading us in the right way. We can remember what is was like to really know God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for my forgetfulness in knowing You. I release those things that have kept me from my first love, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
